August Heat: The Records Running the Rest of the Summer

By August the summer playlist has already been fought over and settled. What is left standing is the real record of the season.

Slow-burn beats fast-burn

The tracks with staying power this year were not the loudest launches. They were the ones that crept up through car speakers, cookouts and late-night sets, adding streams every week instead of spiking and dying.

Regional radio still decides

Atlanta, Detroit, Houston and the Bronx are each running a different August. National charts flatten that out, but the block does not — and the block is usually right first.

What carries into fall

Expect the summer's most durable hooks to reappear on deluxe editions and festival setlists through September. The rest will quietly disappear from the rotation before Labor Day.
